Aspen Snow - February 14, 2016
Nikon D4 + NIkon 200-400mm f4 VR
I was hunkered down and patiently waiting for the coyotes I so enjoyed photographing the past two weeks. Nestled between snow banks and last year's cattails, I was situated in the middle of an ice-covered river. It was snowing, cold, and I was a bit feverish, yet I was determined to see this playful group once again. The snow blew in from the southwest, and the tracks that once guided me towards their world were all but gone. Ninety-minutes later with gear and body coated in fresh snow I saw this pattern in the distance and waited for the right gust. Once "in the can" and chilled to the bone I knew that my shooting day was over. With my head down I slowly trudged the mile hike out of the woods and retreated to the warmth of a cup of joe and steamy hot shower.

Fall is a refreshing departure from the photographic malaise of an August in the midwest. While the heat of summer is a comfortable respite from Minnesota's endless winter, it is a bit monotonous for an image maker. Green leaves are dull from months of exposure and are rendered as faded cyan even when photographed during the magic hours of dusk and dawn. Despite the abundance of naive chicks, fawns and cubs, the thick vegetation during this brief growing season makes it nearly impossible to isolate a photographic subject. In contrast, fall ushers in the the "great clearing." With shades of yellow, orange and red serving as my studio, impenetrable thickets now glow in the morning light to clearly reveal my subjects as they toil and prepare for winter. To the photographer, autumn is a near perfect collision between subject matter and light; to the worker bee/weekend warrior it is the season that rewards sleep deprivation with seldom seen snippets of time.

Reflecting the Sky - Crex Meadows WMA, WI
Canon 5D Mark iii + Canon 17-40mm L @ 18mm
The parting shot in this Fall series was made at the Crex Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary in Grantsburg, Wisconsin. A lesser known gem between the Twin Cities and Superior, Crex is a managed series of dikes and ponds that extend as far as the eye can see. During the Fall and Spring migrations, these ponds are home to thousands of sandhill cranes and migratory fowl. This image was made while waiting for the cranes to arrive at their nocturnal roost. While it's always exciting to see the birds drop from the sky, the low clouds made for poor arial photography… the same can not be said for making a few unique landscape images.

The Sculpture - Osceola, WI
Canon 5D Mark III + Canon 24mm f3.5L TSE, 3-Shot Stitched Panorama
January 26th was another 14 degree morning. The crisp night turned water to stone, and a sculpture was left in its wake. Ephemeral as the day's weather, the ice evolves as warm air replaces cold. The artist, Winter, manipulates her medium with a frequency unlike any I have seen before. Her work is nothing short of a masterpiece, and I am lucky when I stumble upon her unique vision.
