Sobralia orchid species - Finca la Anita, Costa Rica

Did You Know (15)?

January 24, 2015 in January 2015

Some flowers only bloom for a day. Often considered “one day wonders,” these plants can be of regional importance that initiate celebrations or festivals. In Costa Rica’s Rincon de La Vieja I encountered a so-called one day wonder belonging to the Genus Sobralia. Having very little knowledge about botany, let alone the taxonomy of orchids, my one tidbit of information is linked to what the locals called this white beauty that blooms overnight and wilts twenty-four hours later… La nombre es “Flor de una día.”

You can see a different perspective of the beautiful bloom here.
